Especially from politicians, we often hear that someone has something already in their DNA, yet they have no idea about the issue of genetics. But the road has led us to someone who doesn’t shout his guesswork into the camera, but is focused, systematic, precise and, for many, invisibly examining the real causes of genetic diseases. Who else can move in this microscopic wonderland, if not a woman named Alice.
Alice Valachová works with doctors as a clinical geneticist for less than three decades. Her colleagues say she’s hardly visible, but when she cracks a problem she’s examining, she’s happy to tell the doctor she’s working with to make a diagnosis.
We’re just doing our job here as best we can, says the doctor. It adds that most cases will be clarified, but despite the state-of-the-art methods they use, there are many that remain unresolved.
It is an extremely wide area. We’re dealing with prenatal diagnostics, from children to adults, to old, neurological, oncology, various internal, cardiological, eye problems,” he says. Genetics are involved in every field of medicine and are constantly progressing, increasing knowledge of the origin of diseases.
For some diseases is already known treatment based on the genetic outcome, the supply.
Hours spent researching genetic chains are compensated by a doctor staying in nature. He loves skates and makes grateful use of the possibilities of the surrounding cycling routes.
