At nine o’clock in the morning, the sun burned quite politely, but fortunately, the Krajčovci couple invited us to the courtyard under the shadow of a beautiful lime and then to the studio, where the academic sculptor, master restorer and stunter Juraj Krajčo has his kingdom.
Although his name on Trenčians or visitors to churches and historical monuments is not immediately shining from descriptive tags, many of the works of art were preserved thanks to his understanding, experience and clever hands.
Juraj Krajčo has restored countless artifacts in Trenčín and wide area. His name is closely linked to the restoration of sculptural and stucco decorations of the Piarist church in Trencin.
The task of the restorer is to preserve as much of the original and also to present the original expression,” he said.
Master Krajčo is currently engaged in the restoration of stucco sculptural decorations from the middle of the 17th century in the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, originally created by Italian masters. It says it is unique in Slovakia by its extent. He often asks the question of his working hours. He answers that he is at work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and three hundred and sixty-five days a year.
For the restoration of the top national monument is not the responsibility of the parish priest or monument office, but of the restorer. You carry the work in your head wherever you go, , says Master Krajčo and adds that it takes more than half a year to carry out the restoration. The stucco is not a cast. It is a modelling mass composed of lime, sand and fine marble meal. Modelled in desired shape by layers. Greater matter also contains metal reinforcement.
The rare thing about it is that it’s not done in the studio, but right on the face of a place made of matter. When I made a cross-section of the hand of a historical sculpture, there were up to nine layers of stucco, the restorer noted.
Juraj is a pleasant companion and well of knowledge. Without exaggeration, a discussion with him would fill the four-page newspaper with interesting content. However, appreciation for his precious colleague was written by his wife during the discussion, and we need to move on to another personality that makes Trencin a nice place to live.
